Creating a Prayerful List for a Godly Spouse

At our May 2023 Parent Conference, Pastor Landon Mauricio of Called Church shared a helpful message on creating a Prayerful List for a Godly Spouse that can help singles know what to pray for in their future partner - plus, parents can encourage their teens and single adult children to create such a list for starters!

There is Power in Prayer!

The following are five helpful tips from Pastor Landon.

1. Seek God's Wisdom and Guidance

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to you." James 1:5

Ask God to help you discern the qualities and traits that align with His will for your life.

2. Identity Nonnegotiable Traits

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" 2 Corinthians 6:14

Reflect on the biblical principles and values that are nonnegotiable for you. They may include traits such as a commitment to personal growth, a heart to serve others, and a love for God and His ways.

3. Consider Desirable Traits

"Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." Proverbs 31:30

Alongside nonnegotiable traits are desired traits such as generosity, shared interests, a sense of humor, or a certain family background.

4. Stay Open to God's Leading

"In all your ways, submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:6

While it is important to create a list, remain open to God's leading and be willing to yield your preferences to His perfect plan. Trust He knows what is best for you and that His ways are higher than our own.

5. Pray Over Your List

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6

Regularly pray over your list, surrendering it to God and seeking His will. Trust Him to guide you, bring the right person into your life at the appointed time, and align your desires with His purpose.

*Remember, that a prayerful list is not a guarantee, but rather a tool for seeking God's guidance in discerning a potential spouse. Allow the Holy Spirit to shape your desires and align them with God's plans.
