Aloha Explicit ohana,
In the coming weeks, we will be sharing past discussions, updated information and resources on sex abuse/assault. We have noticed increasing instances of peer-on-peer child sex abuse within our communities and social circles.
Were you aware that:
1 in 9 girls and 1 in 20 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault.
82% of victims under 18 are female, and females aged 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault (RAINN) (Victims of Crime).
Every 9 minutes, Child Protective Services substantiates or finds evidence for a claim of child sexual abuse in the United States (RAINN).
Only about one-third of child sexual abuse incidents are identified, and even fewer are reported to authorities (Darkness to Light).
Victims of child sexual abuse are about four times more likely to develop symptoms of drug abuse, experience PTSD, and have major depressive episodes as adults (RAINN).
93% of child victims know their perpetrator; 59% of perpetrators are acquaintances, 34% are family members, and only 7% are strangers (RAINN).
During a one-year period, 16% of youth aged 14 to 17 had been sexually victimized (Victims of Crime).
In the video below, Chris Yanuaria and David Nisthal define key terms, explore the spectrum of sexual violence, and discuss the significant role of alcohol, particularly among college-aged individuals. They also examine how gender socialization and hookup culture contribute to these issues. The video and discussion provides a foundational understanding and perspective that will help you navigate the topic and future content.
May God bless you dearly,
Explicit Team
